Glenn Kaiser has released a new cigar box guitar album called "Long Way From My Home".  With this being a cigar box guitar album, Glenn has chosen to take this back to a very rootsy sound.  You will hear Glenn and his guitars he's built or had built for him.  You will hear some from his old "Trimmed & Burning" days.  This is classic blues in the delta style.Since I build 'em and play 'em, I am downloading this!  I love Glenn's voice, and there aren't many CBG artists out there.  Of those, he and I are the only two I know of trying to make music that glorifies Jesus.  So, of COURSE I am getting this.

Chris Cain Band - Late Night City Blues

Bitrate: 320K/s
Year: 1994
Time: 42:08
Size: 103,8 MB
Label: Blue Rock'it Records
Styles: Blues
Art: Full

Tracks Listing:
 1. Wake Up And Smell The Coffee - 3:46
 2. I Need A Woman To Treat Me Right - 2:39
 3. Late Night City Blues - 6:20
 4. A Woman Don't Need - 5:28

 6. She Takes Good Care Of Me - 3:36
 7. When The Blues Come To Call - 4:02
 8. Same Old Fool - 4:50
 9. Lonely Room - 6:59

This was basically Chris Cain's first album. I believe he had made single cuts of songs on the album prior to its release. This album reflects the true, gutsy styling of a young blues man on the rise. The songs on this album, though rough around the edges regarding its studio work, was and probably will always be the some of the best work Chris Cain has ever produced. "Wake Up and Smell the Coffee" and "Late Night City Blues" are true blues masterpieces. These are the songs where Chris' guitar solos made even B.B. King stand up and notice. Chris went on tour with B.B. right after this album was cut.
The songs on this album were written during a time when Chris was "gigging" in San Jose and Monterey nightclubs. He was always a favorite attraction on Cannery Row, where on a Friday or Saturday night you would find packed houses and blues enthusiasts lined around the block to see him. When you went to see a Chris Cain show, you knew you'd be in for a good time, because it was a totally blissful blues environment. Chris was very personable and made everyone feel like they were part of the party. But, make no mistake. It was the whining of that beautiful sound coming out of Chris' guitar that they all focused on. It just had a way of cutting through you and stayed with you forever. This album is red hot.

The Chris Fitz Band takes American blues and roots music and drives it into the 21st century with electric abandon and virtuosity all the while sounding modern and original. This music grooves with the best! If you like guitar music and Jams this is it!
Chris Fitz personifies the powerful front man who sings, plays incendiary lead and rhythm guitar while giving the audience a breath taking performance. Dynamic highs and lows express his colorful original material on this new live, all original CD, LIVE AT DODGE STREET. Fitz's original material is fleshed out, embellished with frequent bandmate, Ken Clark, an explosive and rhythmic Hammond B-3 artist. Their collaboration is so natural. The two "have no brakes" their approach to this music is infused with natural spark.
Fitz has grown up in the Blues tradition. He has a sensibility that Blues lovers can relate to. His songs are tales of a musician who has lived the Blues on the road for many years, working 7 days a week, gaining dedicated fans in audiences from all over New England to Europe and from Memphis to California.
The listener is at once lifted up by his ethereal Blues and then pitched back down into the rocky road of reality, all the while thrilling to the virtuosity of this masterful guitar player. Fitz's talent spans the collection of Blues styles. He can offer a sweet Delta style finger picking tune then break into a strong, muscular sound. The next moment his sound is quite tender and haunting and he can swing with the best of them! He is a consummate entertainer. Well deserving a of a wider audience - Diana Shonk- Publisher, The Blues Audience newsletter, 2/22/2010.

 9. How It Feels To Be Free - 3:11
10. This Little Light - 4:00

Winner of 2015 GRAMMY Roots Gospel Album!
"SHINE FOR ALL THE PEOPLE is the long-awaited follow up to 2007's critically acclaimed SALVATION IN LIGHTS and includes both original material and Farris' trademark interpretations of traditional gospel steeped in the influence of rock, vintage Memphis soul and the swagger of New Orleans.  Farris’ musical vision has coalesced into a sound that, at once, harkens back to early soul records yet emerges completely fresh with this new studio record. The album’s 10 tracks are saturated with horns, B3, and gospel backing vocals, but Farris is the star here, as his voice is one of the greatest of our time while staking his claim as sole proprietor of a musical style uniquely his own.
SHINE FOR ALL THE PEOPLE opens with “River Jordan,” an almost cubano, horn-punctuated groove, driven by Farris’ soaring vocals that form a surprising link between Havana and Hattiesburg. Two Farris originals, “Power of Love” and “Real Fine Day,” convey the album’s uplifting message of survival and gratitude. The New Orleans-infused “Sparrow” takes a side trip to Preservation Hall, and the achingly poignant “Mercy Now,” from the pen of singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier—as delivered by Farris—stands tall as a plea of forgiveness for all mankind. This album bears witness to the determination of putting one foot in front of the other and to the power of music to get you there. “I’ve discovered that falling is a divine thing,” Mike adds. “It’s part and parcel of being human. The important thing is to keep the faith, get up and go on."

11. Never Get Over You - 4:01
12. Shutting Me Down - 3:51
13. Only Love Can Satisfy - 3:56

"Canadian-born and -bred Danny Brooks may be — although you'd never know it from one listen to this album — an ode to all things Southern and mystical. Brooks' voice is equal parts John Fogerty yeowl and Bob Seger back-row bluster with a liberal dose of Bruce Springsteen bombast thrown in to make sure you're getting the message loud and clear. But Brooks also writes one great song, and this album is filled with them. He finds release in traveling down South into America's backwoods ("Georgia Bound," the title track), while the acceptance of life's everyday ups and downs is mirrored on "Show Up and Sing," "Wheels Keep Spinning," "Just a Little Faith," "The Way It Goes" and "Got to Be More Than This." Four of the tracks on the project were mixed by Jim Dickinson in Memphis. A batch of great songs soaked in the Southern aesthetic."-- AMG Review by Cub Koda

Original-Blues-Rock that's warm and organic, with plenty of pump and sizzle.
It's practically unbelievalbe that Nobby can continue to generate new music that is both soothing and invigorating at the same time. This CD is not only Nobby at his very best, but he ventures into territory not before explored by him and his band. Not only is there simply wonderful blues, but his artistry with the synth brings some of this CD into the prog realm. Once agian, Nobby has pieced together a CD of absolutely fantastic music......of the ilk that we should all own for our own heads and hearts.

Josh White (1914-1969) was a brilliant musician whose vibrant guitar and rich vocals captivated audiences for decades. Recorded at the height of his career by Moses Asch in the 1940s, he performs these 26 blues, gospel, popular, and hard-hitting topical songs solo or accompanied by such contemporaries as Lead Belly, Mary Lou Williams, and the Almanac Singers. Extensive biographical notes, photographs, archivist's remarks, bibliography, and discography. 74 minutes. Produced and compiled by Jeff Place and Elijah Wald. Additional annotation by Kip Lornell.
This fine 26-song compilation of material was recorded by folklorist Moses Asch in the 1940s, at a time when Josh White was beginning to reach an urban, educated audience with his mixture of blues, folk, and pop styles. What comes across particularly strong in this set is his versatility and all-around appeal; he handles topical songs about discrimination and war, spirituals, covers of blues by Leroy Carr and Victoria Spivey, folk ballads, and theatrical pieces, even extending to a cover of Cole Porter's "Miss Otis Regrets." "One Meatball" provided some of the musical inspiration for the classic Merle Travis tune "Sixteen Tons"; "Freedom Road" had lyrics by poet Langston Hughes. Because he was less earthy and not as Southern-sounding as Leadbelly and Big Bill Broonzy, White has been accorded less critical respect, but this anthology shows him to be one of the unquestioned linchpins of the first stirrings of the folk revival. Free & Equal Blues includes copious notes by White biographer Elijah Wald.

Big Gilson: bears the distinction of being acclaimed by such greats as B.B. King and Buddy Guy. He has appeared at Buddy Guy’s famous Legends, The Blue Note – New York and many other top venues. Called the king of the slide guitar – this is truly justified – but this should not be allowed to detract from his superb mastery of all forms of guitar playing – the guy is a genius! Strangely enough he does not hail from Memphis or Chicago but from Rio de Janeiro – he really is bringing the blues back home
The Wolf: his emotive passionate and powerful vocals combine with an amazing stage presence. This has brought about a cult following and the media and radio presenters in the USA and other countries throughout the world have praised his work.
His vocals mirror life’s experiences – making him one of the best contemporary songwriters in his genre. Wolf hails not from the deep south of the USA but from the deep south of the UK!

Nuno Mindelis (born August 7, 1957, in Cabinda, Angola), nicknamed "The Beast from Brazil", is an Angolan-born Brazilian blues guitarist and singer-songwriter.
Most of his recorded work has been sung in English; however, he recorded his 2006 album Outros Nunos in Portuguese, his native language. He has recorded two albums with the band Double Trouble. Mindelis counts Otis Redding and Johnny Winter among his musical influences.
Mindelis became a guitar enthusiast at the age of 5. By the age of 9 he began building and playing self-made guitars. A primary influence at that time was Otis Redding and his rhythm section, Booker T. & the MG's.
In 1990, an independent recording he had made began to receive airplay on local radio stations. In 1991, he recorded his debut solo album, Blues & Derivados, which received positive reviews in Brazilian media. In 1992, he recorded his second solo album, Long Distance Blues for Movieplay Records. In this album Mindelis was joined by Larry McCray, and the French harmonica player, J.J. Milteau. As part of his promotional tour for the album, Mindelis played at a blues festival in São Paulo, featuring Robert Cray, Otis Clay, Ronnie Earl, Lonnie Brooks and Bo Diddley.
In 1994, Guitar Player magazine profiled Mindelis. Further recognition came in their May 1998 issue, as Mindelis was selected as "Best Blues Guitarist" in the 30th Anniversary Guitar Player competition. In 1995, Mindelis played at Antone's 20th Anniversary in Austin, Texas, opening for Guy Forsite and Junior Wells others. Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Storyville also performed at the event.
Later that year, Mindelis recorded his album Texas Bound, featuring Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton, of Stevie Ray Vaughan's rhythm section, Double Trouble. Texas Bound was the 12th best selling album seller in Benelux.
In 1999, Mindelis released Blues On The Outside. Mindelis appeared at the 25th edition of the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2001, and did other presentations in Quebec, Ottawa. Mindelis played at the festival again in 2004, after the release of his album Twelve Hours, and again played Quebec and Ottawa, and also the Montremblant Blues Festival, sharing the stages with Keb' Mo' and Jimmie Vaughan. Andy Grieg in Canada's Real Blues magazine asked, "Is the new King of the blues a man based in Brazil?"

"This is a rockin' good album from a Texas-based artist right from the opening R&B riffs through to the last song. The electric guitar solos in particular are superb while the support from sax, organ, harmonica and percussion is of a high standard, as are the production values that allow each instrument to breathe without any sense of clutter. Miller's voice is absolutely suited to the genre, combing gravel and sugar with seasoned confidence. The gospel lyrics are uncompromising. I loved the funky "Chillin' With God" where Miller is joined on vocals by his son Sam, while "Who Dat Gonna Love You Like Jesus" has a country feel and is probably the most infectious track. The opener "No One To Blame But Me" is a refreshing blame-taker, no responsibility shirking here. "I Ain't Ashamed" is a powerful statement of standing up for the faith. Slow blues like "I Need You" are as effective as the rockers and there are a few hot instrumentals like "Santa Ana" which give the virtuoso playing a workout without being in any way self-indulgent. "Terrorist Blues" mixes politics and religion and I thought it was the least successful track. Yes, he's getting at Muslim terrorists who give their religion a bad name, but for me it needed to be more sensitive. The last track "A Few Minutes With Michael" is just that - Miller invites the listener directly to pray with him. It may do some good, but personally I'm not a fan of spoken word tracks. The sleeve is nicely designed, but lacks a lyrics sheet or comprehensive credits - I had to head for Miller's website to get more information and while Brad Parish is credited with the great sax playing I'm still not sure if Miller is playing all the rest of it or if there's a band or session players."-- crossrhythms review by Brendan O'Regan

This CD is a tour de force collection of Blues and Jazz standards and rearranged to bring these age-old classics of yesterday into the 21st century. By stepping into her inheritance Habaka dedicates this masterpiece to her family and she wears the crown.
Famous for her profound contralto voice, strong yet smooth and crystal clear, a voice that calls to mind the sultriness and class of Cassandra and Nancy Wilson, the sassiness of Eartha Kitt, the subtleness of Shirley Horn, and even, when necessary, the big vibrato of Bessie Smith, Etta James and Mahalia Jackson, all wrapped up into one phenomenally talented woman...International Blues, Jazz, Gospel recording artist and midday radio host to BlackBerryJazz Radio, Habaka Kay Foster Jackson.
Born in the Music City, Nashville, TN, Habaka KFJ comes from a lineage of musicians and entertainers. Her grandfather Jerry Jackson was a pianist and promoter, her mother Mary Ann Jackson, an international dancer & jazz vocalist, and her father Melvin Jackson, Legendary saxophonist for more than 20yrs with none other than the King of the Blues, B.B. King. Extending the family lineage, this international recording artist, and mentor, Habaka KFJ, has gone on to perform in the most prominent concert venues, captivating audiences throughout Europe and America in some of the most prestigious Clubs, Festivals, Theaters, and Cathedrals in the world and even standing and being seated before Nobility.
Habaka's first recording with the group IZ Army released the LP entitled "The Bomb" under AMP Records. Gospel music, also a passion of hers, led her to record her next LP “Eternal Life" under Exodus Records, as lead singer for the group, Burning Bush. Habaka, being one of the most sought after jazz, gospel, and blues voices of today, has collaborated on several projects and recordings and, of course, has also been the featured artist on many of these projects. Habaka's first ever Holiday Classic CD: "Back in the city...It's Christmas", and "I Will Wait For You" were released under Tate Music Group and, most recently, the Jazz inspired "Just Say I Love Him".
In December 2016 Habaka will release her most personal and soulfully inspired album produced by Habaka entitled "Heritage Blue" under Husky Tone Records featuring amazingly outstanding musicians that includes a stellar performance by James Boogaloo Boldin (former bandleader on trumpet for B.B. King), Eric Demmer on sax (formerly with Gatemouth Brown), and James Lamar Boulet on trumpet. This phenomenal recording is a tour de force collection of Blues and Jazz standards, and originals rearranged "Habaka Style" to bring these age-old classics of yesterday into the 21st century. On this brilliant new release coming December 2016, Habaka takes her listeners on a journey from Blues to Jazz, and Soul to Funk from pleasure to pain and everywhere in between.
This is Habaka stepping into her inheritance, coming from such a rich family legacy, and by vowing to continue to extend that legacy, she is considered to be one of the last authentic Blues, Jazz voices in her genre today...and why not? After all, it's her DNA!

Blues on steroids. An exciting in-your-face fusion of Texas blues and classic rock styles make this guitar-driven CD a keeper. No babies allowed.
What do you get when you cross ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Joe Walsh? I don't know either, so forget that. That was dumb. What I do know is that every once in awhile a band comes along that has "that sound" that is unmistakably theirs. The genre-defying Bare Wires is that band. It's more than just blues, it's more than just rock, it's more than you can wrap your head around. Bare Wires' new album entitled "Won't Be Lookin' Back" explores the diversity that each member brings to the table. In a world where so many bands sound alike, and so many albums sound the same, Bare Wires dares to be different. One word of warning though, "Won't Be Lookin' Back" may just become your new favorite album.
So....just who is Bare Wires? Bare Wires is four souls who started playing music many years ago, many bands ago, and many miles apart, finally coming together in Moscow, Idaho. Blues is the thread that holds it all together, with scraps of rock, and who knows what else woven in wherever it seems to fit. Lyrics and music from their heads and guts, spawned from life experiences and vivid imaginations, make Bare Wires who they are. They play an eclectic mix of original material that is often described as "pretty darn swell." (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/barewires)

Burly Larry McCray crashed the consciousness of the blues world with his stunning debut album, comprised of equal parts blues, soul, and rock. Guitar fanatics will no doubt wax rhapsodic about McCray's blazing pyrotechnics on "Nobody Never Hurt Nobody with the Blues," but it's the mellower R&B material buried toward the end of the CD -- "Secret Lover," "Me and My Baby" -- that best displays the warmth of the young bluesman's voice. Tab him for 21st-century blues stardom!

Due to unforseen circumstances, Serena Ryder is not able to perform, as previously announced.
“Mitch Ryder is the legendary link between classic Motown R&B and hard rocking Detroit-area bands like the MC5 and the Stooges. The Hamtramck native has recorded over two dozen albums in a career that stretches back to the mid-60s, and he still captivates audiences with his fiery vocals and commanding stage presence. He was in fine form the last time he performed at Sonic Lunch, so expect another great set of timeless hits when Mitch Ryder closes out the 9th season of Sonic Lunch on Thursday, August 25th” Martin Bandyke, ann arbor's 107one
“Good fortune smiled upon Ann Arbor this week when we learned that Mitch was going to play Sonic Lunch for us again. His pervious Sonic Lunch performance left us dancing in the streets and singing his classic songs throughout his entire show,” said Tim Marshall, President and CEO of Bank of Ann Arbor. “When we learned that his schedule opened up, we jumped on it.”
Started in 2008, Bank of Ann Arbor’s Sonic Lunch is a free summer outdoor concert series happening at the corner of Liberty and Division in downtown Ann Arbor. Every Thursday from Noon to 1:30pm June 2 to August 25, Sonic Lunch features a live band from an impressive array of talent in the region, as well as national and international acts. Each week a different area restaurant is on-site selling a Sonic Lunch for concert-goers to purchase. Other restaurants offer special discounts for concert-goers to pick up to take to the park.
Sonic Lunch concerts are free and suitable for all ages. Seating is available but lawn chairs are welcome. Come join the crowds for an energizing mid-day break or just relax and enjoy the sounds.
Sonic Lunch is the result of a collaborative effort spearheaded by Bank of Ann Arbor. Perich Advertising & Design, a local advertising agency, contributes the annual design of Sonic Lunch posters, banners, t-shirts and stickers. This is one of those rare times when you can almost judge a CD its cover. That bands psychedelic logo in front cover capturing Stoney Curtis in his element knee-deep in the blues, lets fans know to expect something amazing. The Stoney Curtis Band has been working the clubs between Las Vegas and Los Angeles, for over ten years honing their own brand of psychedelic blues-rock readying their show for the road ahead. Over the past few years the band has done a number of that USA tours and six European tours as well.  Heavily steeped in 60's/70's psychedelia, the Stoney Curtis Band has translated the energy of their phenomenal live show into an incredible CD/DVD package "Stoney Curtis Band Live". In the tradition of classic blues rock power trio such as the Jimi Hendrix experience, Cream, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Double Trouble, the Stoney Cutis Band are centered around their lead singer/lead guitarist Stoney Curtis who is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive strat players on the circuit today. It is no wonder why rows and rows of Harley's line up in Vegas to see this aggressive trio whip the crowd into a frenzy with their own brand of psychedelic blues-rock fueled by Stoney's non-stop guitar pyrotechnics.

Soulful Rock N Roll from the Pacific Northwest. When I was a kid, I remember the anticipation of buying a new LP. LPs, that’s what they were back then. A big, ole vinyl disc, containing the player’s secrets and the keys to life. On the albums, maiden voyage, I swear I listened a hole right through it. So closely I listened, by the end of side 2, I was exhausted! Eventually, as the music became part of me, I hungered for more information about these god-like beings, capable of moving me in ways I never dreamed of. Fortunately, the liner notes offered me that! The music was why I bought the LP, but the liner notes added to the mystique and sometimes added a level of understanding between me and the band. We became friends, at least in my mind. Eventually, I hoped we’d become colleagues. Maybe we are approaching that now.
All those years ago, I never imagined the amount of work that went into making an album pf music. It is hard work, folks! Often times, hearts and souls are laid bare during the process. Egos can be crushed, but also spirits can be buoyed! At the end of the process, triumph reigns! A lot of territory has been covered since we made the first JunkBelly EP in 2010, the debut album in 2013 and now our 2nd full length album in 2016. We went from a 4 piece to a 5 piece to a trio and then to a different trio! Our path has been full of twists and turns, but our vision has always been the same; Make music that comes from our heart!
Not only does this album contain the hard work and dedication of Wayne, Rick and I, but also Eric, Jessie, Jeff, Tom and Brad. It is also a tribute to the people who love us. Particularly, LaVon, Trina and Julie. Many dear friends have encouraged us along the way. A special thank you goes out to Steve Clem and Jenn Byrd for their consultations on guitar, vocals and song arrangement. Thanks also to Evan Anderson for his input on drum tracks. All the kind words, deeds and suggestions have driven us to this point; brought us to this moment. We are excited to have this project complete and read for public consumption. Listen in good health!
Be well, Mike

High-powered music from seasoned musicians, exploring blues, rhythm and rhyme with tight arrangements and production!
If executing every note with perfection is neurosis, Churlish Louts can attest that investing a life of hard knocks into every utterance or twang, and playing your ass off, is pure fun. This bunch of seasoned, talented ruffians are having a heyday performing what they do best. The result is proud, visceral and undeniably rooted in the Kansas City blues tradition, with an urban edge that at times approaches sophistication - but fret not – any tendency toward refinement or cultivation is destined to be bested by this band’s deep-seated earthy inelegance, as their name implies.

 7. A Woman Needs Love - 4:08
 8. We Still Together - 3:50
 9. The Next Time - 5:02
10. I Can't Wait - 4:09

Roy Roberts is one of those old-timers, a guy who’s been around the East Coast US music scene most of his seventy-year plus life. In that time, he’s remained below the radar yet been sideman and guitarist with many influential giants of US popular music. This is a guy who was a soul mate of Otis Redding in the 60s; he shimmied with Solomon Burke and Eddie Floyd; worked with Stevie Wonder (when he was still ‘Little Stevie’) and many of the soul music dynasty while developing his own sound, reflected in this excellent ten track album. Strange Love has that full-on Stax sound: rounded Horns; crisp guitar work seamlessly merged with soulful, rocking vocals. Roberts wrote all of the material here, and it is a tribute to his ability and undoubted talent.
With ‘Strange Love’, Roy Roberts shows he is still firmly rooted in the Deep South but has shaken himself free of his long passed and more successful musical buddies to emerge triumphantly from the shadows. Recommended for sure.

“Rock House Blues, the 6th album from LenCat, could have just as easiliy been called the Bar Band Blues. It celebrates the life and good times of our local pub/lounge/tavern/bar/dive/night club life. As long as there's a stage and some lighting LenCat will play to the crowd, bring out the best in them and deliver a hometown feel-good night. Just listen to those last 3 cuts loosely recorded at some of the Bay Area's finest Rock and Blues establishments.
For over 25 years LenCat has performed, recorded and rocked in the Bay Area. Sometimes they're bluesy and soulful. Sometimes they're hard rockin', Sometimes they're weird and warped. But they are always entertaining! LenCat is Len Callo on Guitar and vocals, Rob Barry on Bass, A.J. Leddy on Drums and, for this album, very special guest harpist, the world renowned Andy Just. Rounding out the great Harp Corp is Earl Smith and John Franks.
What is a LenCat?
The origin of the name comes from the time, in the early 80's, when Len ordered a 10 album, Frank Zappa, box set from Zappa's mail order catalog. A few of the discs were warped so Len sent the whole box back. Well, someone in Franks shipping department didn't like that so, when they shipped back a new box, there was a snide note that read "Hey Len cat, next time just send back the discs that are warped instead of the whole box"
Cut to the year 2000: Len was putting out his first solo cd (the long out of print "Battered, Tattered, Bruised and Abused") and thought that the name Len Callo was too boring.
He remembered the "Len cat" remark, changed it to LenCat and used it as a stage name/band name. And now you know the rest of the story.

Luther Grovesnor's second solo album was a long time coming. The first, back in 1972, caught him midway between stints with Spooky Tooth and, in the guise of glam rock hooligan Ariel Bender, Mott the Hoople. The second, almost a quarter of a century later, caught him somewhere between forgotten hero-dom and absolute obscurity, and in the handful of interviews he gave around that time, he seemed to prefer it that way. He talked of living a normal life and playing guitar for fun. But back in the studio for the first time in years, it was as though he'd never been away. This is not, if any stray Mott fans are passing, an Ariel Bender album. Returning to his given name, he also returned to the style which distinguished both Spooky Tooth and Under Open Skies, the understated melody that has always been his songwriting signature, the underexposed flash which peels out of his guitar, and the underground exuberance which made his the first number the Stones called after Brian Jones left in 1969. Slammed down in ten days with a revolving door of guest friends (Jim Capaldi, Mike Kellie, Jess Roden) dropping by, it relies on Grovesnor's own persona for charm and effect, keeps fancy production tricks at farthest arm's reach, and it never shows off. Understated, underexposed, underground. Comparisons can be found. "Ninsky Prospect" has a vaguely Lou Reed feel to it, while Kellie's "Fullness of Time" brags a distinctly (but, ironically, pre-Bender) Mott swagger. Elsewhere, a cover of Bob Seger's "Fire Down Below" follows the old Spooky Tooth trick of taking someone else's song and making it their own forever, and there's a thunderous Roden-led romp through Joe Tex's "I Wanna Be Free," which could, in fact, be Free, so there's irony for you. And those are only the most obvious highlights — one could also dwell forever on the autobiographical opener "Evesham Boy," the stunningly tuneful title track, and if you missed it first time around (a lot of people did), the 2001 Floodgates Anthology reissue turns up even more marvels. Eight bonus tracks include an acoustic version of "Floodgates" previously available only on a rare promo sampler, two tracks recorded for the Peter Green tribute Rattlesnake Guitar, and three cut in 1997 for an attempted Spooky Tooth reunion — all good enough to make you wish the project had been taken to fruition. Then comes one track recorded by the teenaged Grovesnor with schoolmate Jim Capaldi in 1966, produced by Giorgio Gomelsky and never before released in any form, while the album closes with another marvel, a live version of "Here Comes the Queen," taken from Grovesnor's debut album, and performed by Mott the Hoople in 1974. And from the collectors' point of view, it's probably true that those two cuts alone are worth the price of admission. True, but very, very misleading.

He was one of the most inventive guitarists of his generation, one of the clutch of flashy young axe-slingers who emerged at the tail end of the 1960s, and turned everything on its head. Up alongside Brian May, Mick Ronson, and Paul Kossoff, Luther Grosvenor rewrote the guitar players' rule book, simply by remembering that technique isn't everything; you have to have some fun as well. Grosvenor grew up in the English town of Evesham, where he and the young Jim Capaldi formed their first bands together, before traveling down to London together, where their band Deep Feeling attracted the attention of producer Giorgio Gomelsky. It was separately, however, that the pair established their names, Capaldi as a founding member of Traffic, Grosvenor aboard Spooky Tooth, one of the most influential British rock bands of the late '60s/early '70s. Releasing four albums, including the million-selling Spooky Two, the band toured extensively both in the U.S. and Europe, building a loyal fan base which even included the Rolling Stones -- who contacted Grosvenor as a possible replacement for Brian Jones in 1969. He turned them down. Grosvenor quit Spooky Tooth in 1972, and released his first solo album, Under Open Skies, before deciding that the solo life was not for him. A brief spell alongside Gerry Rafferty in Stealers Wheel was followed by an invitation to join the band which was, essentially, the decade's answer to the original Rolling Stones, Mott the Hoople. And this time, there was no hesitation. He even changed his name for the occasion, to Ariel Bender. Ariel Bender was the ultimate rock guitarist. In an age when even the most pedestrian guitarist was tarting up beneath barrels of makeup and finery, Bender went completely over the top, visually and aurally. His name was gifted to him by singer Lynsey de Paul, a friend who shared his vision of the world's most Over the Top guitar player, and it fit like a glove. Except he didn't simply bend ariels. He could break them with a single chord. In the studio, Bender transformed Mott, firing them through one more studio set, 1974's The Hoople, a storming live album, and a clutch of immortal hit singles. But it was on-stage that Bender made the greatest impression, with his mane of hair flying, literally battling Ian Hunter for the center stage spotlight, and peeling off riffs as raucous as they were riotous. Posthumous exhumations from the band's live archive have heightened awareness of Bender's brilliance even further -- the 30th anniversary edition of Live, swollen from one short LP to two stuffed CDs, includes some of his most ferocious playing ever. Grosvenor left Mott in 1974 (to be replaced by Mick Ronson), and immediately formed Widowmaker, a hard rock band that plunged straight into the spotlight when they were invited to open for the Who's latest U.K. tour. Unfortunately, that was as good as it got. Although Widowmaker made what Grosvenor still remembers as "two great albums," by 1979, bored with the bullsh*t, he didn't simply quit the group. He walked out on the music industry altogether. The idol of millions became a legend instead, and would remain one for the next 17 years. It was early 1996 before he was tempted back into the studio, by the opportunity to record two tracks, "Crying Won't Bring You Back" and "Merry Go Round," for the Rattlesnake Guitar tribute to Peter Green. Aided by old friends Jim Capaldi, Steve Winwood, Jess Roden, and former Spooky Tooth drummer Mike Kellie, the Ariel Bender Band became the impetus for Grosvenor to finally record some of the songs he had written during his years away, for release as 1996's Floodgates album. Sadly, poor promotion and distribution saw the album sink, and it would be another five years before an expanded reissue (on the U.K. Angel Air label) finally resuscitated it, via a bonus-stacked edition that also included the two Rattlesnake Guitar songs, three songs recorded at a 1997 Spooky Tooth reunion, and an unreleased 1966 recording of Deep Feeling, from the Gomelsky sessions. Grosvenor himself, meanwhile, did not completely vanish; he continued to play live and even made the occasional visit to the studio, to cut a song or two for some new project, including a tremendous recasting of "Roll Away the Stone" for the 2005 Mott the Hoople Family Anthology. ~ Dave Thompson

14. Drucilla - 4:19
15. Whoa! Back Buck - 5:09

This is a solid collection of acoustic tracks recorded by McHouston "Mickey" Baker in London in 1973. The tunes feature Baker on vocals and acoustic guitars, but Stefan Grossman helps out some, as does itinerant percussion master Ray Cooper. While there are solid and highly individual covers of material here by J.B. Lenoir ("Good Advice"); Charley Patton ("High Sheriff Blues"); Leadbelly ("Whoa! Back Buck"); Son House ("Sun Is Going Down"), and Robert Johnson ("Sweet Home Chicago" and "Terraplane Blues"), it is Baker's originals that really shine. The funky "Trouble Is a Woman" with Cooper and Grossman; "Drucilla," written by Baker and Peter Chatman, and another of their collaborations in "Animal Farm" (the latter with one of a few selections recorded with a string section). This may be authentic Delta blues, but Baker is a restless man and is not content to let things be. The string arrangements are off-putting at first, but upon repeated listening make perfect sense in lieu of the material. Mississippi Delta Blues is as fine an introduction to Mickey Baker as there is.
