This CD from Terry Davidson & The Gears, will have you running from Columbus to Chicago, Memphis, Austin and even a little side trip to the county fair. It presents an accurate representation of their wide range of styles and influences, even including elements of Jazz and Surf music, and a Stones inspired boogie. The creative chemistry between Terry, Todd and “The Wrench” is highlighted by the fact that 12 of the 14 tracks are band originals. The guitar is astounding (showcasing Terry’s, trademark, clean fret work with some gritty slide as well) and rocks to the max. Also, Ray Fuller is a welcome addition on harp! Clever word play and inspired playing by all.

Dr Project Point Blank Blues Band have been playing the blues for 20 years this year. The line-up may have changed quite a bit along the way, but the style of music has remained the same. Along the way they have helped to firmly establish a blues scene in the former Yugoslavia, and the release of their seventh album "8 Blue Balls" shows that they are an outfit worth taking seriously.
Things start way out in left field with a short waltz introduction, "By The Way (You Look Tonight)," which will have you wondering if you have come to the right place. This is soon displaced by the rocking guitar intro to "Johnny Passed Away" which provides a good indication of where the band are coming from. Although the sound is largely dominated by tasty guitar work (from the Dr: Dragoljub Crncevic, who also handles most of the vocals), there is also plenty of keyboards on offer too, courtesy of Darko Grujic. The band show that they are happy at slowing things down on the excellent "A Cross To Bear," with its soulful (and doleful) vocals. John O'Leary (ex Savoy Brown) contributes the very fine harp licks here, and elsewhere.
All of the songs are originals, and they make the most of the guitar and organ which are laid over the rock steady beat from the rhythm section of Jovan Pejcinovic (drums) and Zoran Milenkovic (bass). It all works really well too, Even though there is a rocky edge to much of the guitar playing, it never really feels like a blues/rock album. The album has plenty of high spots, with the driving instrumental, "Blue Ball," "Some Other Place"--if Jarvis Cocker from Pulp sang the blues, this is what it would sound like--and the almost funky "Lazy Mama" all worthy of extra special mention.
After the full version of "By The Way (You Look Tonight)," a waltz sounding like it is being played on an old wind-up gramophone, complete with Jim Reeves-like vocals, there are a couple of bonus tracks just to make the package complete. The first, "You Give Me A Reason" has an almost Doors-like keyboard sound to it, whilst "Up & Down" sounds like it would make a great encore on a live show.
"8 Blue Balls" is a very good album indeed. DR Project Point Blank Blues Band are a fine outfit, and yes, they can definitely play the blues. They also write top quality songs, many of which have great hooklines to them. "8 Blue Balls" is an album that is well worth tracking down, especially if you like your blues to have a raw, rocky edge to it. Even if you do not, check it out anyway, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Benny Valerio was fourteen years old when he bought his first Fender Stratocaster with money from a paper route on the near north side of Houston in 1961. His early listening focused on B. B. King, Jimmy Reed, and Chuck Berry, with the early Cobra sides of Otis Rush another major influence. When the Beatles played the Sam Houston Coliseum, Benny gave his ticket to his brother and headed to a black club on Old Spanish Trail to hear Jimmy Reed instead. A self-taught musician, he spent his underage years sneaking into clubs and vying for gigs in southeast Texas and Louisiana--drummer Uncle John "Red" Turner recently called himself, Benny, Johnny Winter, and the late Joey Long "the last of the original Texas/Louisiana border bandits." Benny's first steady gig was playing guitar with Cajun musician Link Davis of "Big Mamou" fame. He also began playing sessions for producer Huey Meaux at an early age, recording with Barbara Lynn and Tommy McLain. Albert Collins, Clarence Holliman, and a young Billy Preston were other Houstonians Benny met and played with at this stage.
During his late teens Benny and his brother Danny often played at the Act III Club in south Houston, a meeting place for local musicians. The underage Valerio brothers ended up taking over its after-hours gig from rival brothers Johnny and Edgar Winter. Some of the other musicians Benny had the chance to play with there were Dennis "Crash" Collins of Houston radio fame, the late Isaac Payton Sweat, and Tony Braunagel, who went on to play drums for Bonnie Raitt. At these jams his initial blues and rock 'n' roll roots were augmented by the R&B influences of the time: Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, the Spencer Davis Group, and the Temptations, among others. Benny went on to back local artists like B. J. Thomas and Roy Head, and played the Cellar and other Houston clubs with bands like Houston Natural Gas during this early phase of his career.
But in 1967 the Valerios' half Southern Italian/half Mescalero Apache heritage led Benny to answer Uncle Sam's draft notice with a tour of duty in the U. S. Marine Corps. He wound up at Khe Sanh during the assault by 50,000 North Vietnamese soldiers and is still thankful to have made it through that and back to Houston in one piece--many of the kids he fought beside did not.
During the Seventies, Benny's career revolved around a pair of legendary clubs: Liberty Hall in Houston and Antones in Austin. The Austin connection came about when Uncle John Turner recruited Benny to join him and Tommy Shannon in their post Johnny Winter band Rattlesnake, replacing a not-yet-fullgrown Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar. When Antones first opened, Benny was able to sit in with Otis Rush and other legends he'd missed in Houston, as well as adding his own playing to Austin's modern blues explosion when performing around the capital.
In his home base of Houston, he was lucky enough to play with the likes of Jimmy Reed, Lightnin' Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, John Mayall, Albert Collins and others at Liberty Hall. Benny and Mance Lipscomb were so close that Mance agreed to do an acoustic blues set for Benny's wedding reception. A chance sit-in on slide guitar impressed Freddie King enough to earn Benny a spot in Freddie's touring band for a year. The musical foundation he had accumulated by the age of 30 led to a tenure as producer Huay Meaux's ace session guitarist at Sugar Hill Studios in the late Seventies.
Through the Eighties and into the Nineties, Benny has led his own groups, playing blues and classic rock relentlessly throughout the Houston area. He even found a way to symbolically pay back the many legends he'd sat in with over the years by successfully pioneering the concept of the regular blues jam in Houston in the late Eighties, a move which helped lead to the Bayou City's thriving blues scene today. His first CD on Wolftrax Records, Texas Thunder, was released in 1993.
Using all of his many R&B, soul and rock influences, Benny Valerio has created a vision of the blues which is solely his own, one that grows out of the experience of a lifetime Surrounded by the Blues. Recorded with his band Texas Thunder at Austin's famed Arlyn and Pedernales studios, his new CD of original tunes showcases his ability to write in a wide array of blues idioms, and a stellar cast of Austin supporting musicians--Derek O'Brien, Mark "Kaz" Kazanoff, and Riley Osbourn--gives the tunes the settings they deserve. From the jazzy organ shuffle "Lik It 'n' Stik It" to the Chicago slide of "Rollin' Up 290," from the Duke/Peacock echoes of "Surrounded by the Blues" to the modern Texas shuffle "l Got What You Need," Benny Valerio delivers the blazing guitar and soulful vocals of an authentic Texas master.

From the pristine waters of the Honey Island Swamp, to the vibrant streets of New Orleans, to the hazy corner of Haight-Asbury in San Francisco, this band has endured devastation, relocation, and revitalization. A group whose sound has been tagged “Bayou Americana,” the Honey Island Swamp Band takes the hammer to the nail with the help of producer Luther Dickinson, and presents Demolition Day to the world April 29 on Ruf Records.
This album marks the 10-year anniversary of the Honey Island Swamp Band, which formed in San Francisco, CA via New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina displaced the founding members.  With little hope of returning to their beloved city, the band channeled the blues and emotions of their circumstances to develop a soulful style and sound that critics have compared to legendary Blues-Roots-Rock Artists such as The Allman Brothers, Little Feat and The Band.
Recording at the Parlor Studio in New Orleans, Honey Island Swamp Band teams up with producer/musician Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars to capture a rhythm and a feel born straight from the heart of Americana. The album features a host of New Orleans finest musicians, including guest appearances by keyboardist Ivan Neville and Tab Benoit on pedal steel.

Known to his fans as the "blues guru," Richard Boals has helped to create the blues scene of the American Midwest. Having built his early reputation, between 1974 and 1995, as a sideman for a variety of show bands and country and blues groups, Boals solidified his standing as host of a Monday night jam session at the Dolphin Lounge in Gahanna, Ohio, from 1984 until 1995. Boals' love of music was sparked by the countless hours that he spent in the back of his father's restaurant, harmonizing with doo-wop records. Together with childhood friends Soni Yinger and Al Peterson, he played his first gig in the basement of a restaurant, at the age of eleven. He continued to play at parties and dances throughout his teens. Graduating from high school in June 1970, Boals enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving until shortly after the conclusion of the Vietnam War, in January 1973. Within five days after his honorary discharge, he had secured a gig at a pool party and had formed a new band. He continued to be an active participant in the Midwest blues scene for more than two decades.
After a decade of balancing his music career with classes at Ohio State University, Boals earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and moved to Denver, where he took a year long hiatus from music. Returning with an impressive album, Mystic City Mantras, which he recorded at the Musical Rec Studios in Columbus, OH, Boals spent five weeks touring the United States. He released a similarly power-driven album, Pieces From the Eclipse, in June 1998. Boals' musical direction went through a dramatic change when he recorded an all-acoustic album, On a Different Path, in July 1999. Forming a new band, Richard P. Boals and the Soals, featuring Al Peterson, Jack Miller, Cornbread Lyons, Steve Hill, Eddy Wilson, and Boals' wife Beth, he recorded Access Denied in October 1999, and That's the Truth the following year.

They call him Mean Gene ’cause, as Joe “Guitar” Hughes once said, “he play a Mean Guitar”.  Thus the title of Texas bluesrocker Mean Gene Kelton’s latest CD release Mean Guitar. As the lyrics in the title song suggest, Mean Gene’s guitar is “red hot” and “razor sharp” – hotter than a welder’s arc, fusing together Chuck Berry/Johnny Winter/Albert Collins and Delta Blues influences into one molten melting pot of scorching blues rock and smoldering Percy Sledge-style ballads. Backed up by top-notch, veteran A-team Die Hard road warriors featuring A.J. Fee on bass, “Dr. C.C.” Curtis Craig on drums, and special guest Kenny Jackson on keyboard, Mean Guitar keeps it’s promise to take the listener on a blues/rock adventure to far reaches of the blues universe. Kelton makes no apologies or excuses, and takes no prisoners as he plays with the fury on an arsonist with a flame thrower. If you are a fan of flat-out, no-holes-barred houserockin’ Texas blues guitar, Mean Guitar is a “stay in the CD player CD”!

The vicious blues outings "Bump and Grind" and "Blue Monday" were the first salvos fired by Hill at the blues market, though much of the set -- "Please Don't Make Me (Do Something Bad to You)," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" -- was solidly in the Southern soul vein.

 9. Little wing - 7:48
10. Shine - 3:49

Stef Burns has released his 2008 solo album, World, Universe, Infinity, which features, in addition to a number of instrumental tracks that he in generally known for, his first lead vocal opportunities. Burns remarks about the half-instrumental, half-vocal project, " The track "Burns' Blues" is inspired by one of my favorites, Jeff Beck. It's blues with a twist. "Mepukori" is based on another song entitled "Spasimo" written by Mario Riso from the "Rezophonic" album in Italy. Lyle Workman and I rearranged, rewrote, and added a new middle section that is gorgeous. Then we got to trade guitar solos. It features Abe Laboriel Jr, and Jimmy Johnson. "On My Way Home" is a very feel good track with lots of atmosphere. "Isle Mystique" has a cool feel. "Shine" I cowrote with Fabio Valdemarin and might be the most emotional track on the album. He is such an incredible piano player. "Space Time" is a funky jazz/pop song with horns and killer solos, while "Little Wing" is a beautiful Hendrix song that I have always loved and we recorded live. The CD features Huey Lewis, Sean Hopper, Bill Champlin, Juan van Emmerloot, Walter Latupeirissa. Peppino D'Agostino, Jeff Campitelli, Marc Russo, John Seppala, John R Burr and Jeff Babko.

10. I'm Living With The Blues - 2:52
11. Gotta Live - 5:00

Shakura's debut solo blues album “Blueprint”, signals a new beginning with some very old music. Blessed with the human musical reservoir Eddy B, some inspiration from Bill King and a lot of time in some very dusty places, Shakura was able to narrow in on songs that she felt ‘gave her something to sing about’. Songs that were once sung by Big Maybelle, Memphis Minnie, Big Mama Thornton and other phenomenal women of the time each become Shakura’s personal anthems. Bringing together the musical talent of Denis Keldie, Howard Ayee, Michelle Josef and guitarist/producer James Bryan gave Shakura’s blues a new canvas to paint on. Guest artist David Rotundo and Harrison Kennedy added a little grit and enough silkiness to spice and smooth wherever necessary, and divas turned back-up singers for the night, Shannon Maracle and Jackie Richardson sashayed where no one has ever gone before.

During the 1970s, pianist Jeff Naideau gave up Connecticut's cold climate for the warmth of California, along the way trading in his classical training for a stint in a rock group. The decision led to work with Wang Chung, Quiet Riot, Robbie Kreiger, and Eric Burden. He found a second home in Louisiana when, during a trip to the Crescent City to take in the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, he sat in during a French Quarter gig at Patout's. The establishment's owner so enjoyed the music Naideau made on the piano that he booked Naideau for the rest of his time in New Orleans. Drawn by the city's musical heritage and culture, the pianist relocated once again and drew inspiration from such Big Easy artists as Dr. John, James Booker, and Professor Longhair. It didn't take long for the rest of New Orleans to warm to Naideau. The House of Seafood and Chef Andrew Jaeger booked him into the French Quarter, snagging him before he'd been there more than a few days. While at The House of Seafood, Naideau shared the stage with numerous New Orleans musicians, including drummer Freddy Staehle. Staehle also contributed his skills to Naideau's second album, Heaven on a Half Shell, from Altered Records.

Howlin Rain is the eponymous debut album by Howlin' Rain. It was released in 2006 on the Birdman Records label.
Howlin' Rain do a good approximation of Southern (California or NJ) rock modernized with noise-guitar Deus ex machina and one particularly jazzy bramble. Not your average Coors Lite crackers, the trio consists of Comets on Fire vocalist and guitarist Ethan Miller, Sunburned Hand of the Man shaman John Maloney on drums, and Ian Gradek on bass and banjo. Outside of the core, Comets contributor Tim Daly adds blustery and homey alto-saxophone and the ever-ubiquitous Tim Green plays a bit of keyboard.
The Arik Roper cover art, great as usual, just about nails the vibe: Pot smoke wafting out of a rural cabin into blue skies. Outside the frame, though, there's likely a flock of storm clouds fast approaching. Noisier tendencies personalize the formula: Think of "Truckin'" with fried tube amps, Allman Brothers' harmonies sideswiped by Monoshock, or CCR infused with heavy doses of Blue Cheer. Wordy song titles (e.g. "Death Prayer in Heaven's Orchard") also point to an ominous vibe not immediately apparent in the good-time hay-baling white-boy squawk.
If only it were all as brilliant as "Calling Lightning With a Scythe", one of my favorite tracks of the year. The wheat-field dramaturgy begins with acoustic strums, twangy banjo, and suitably bummer lyrics: "On Sunday I found your rotting bones/ Oh, my old friend, it's so hard to let you go." Amid increased guitar doses, now electric, and some horns, the protagonist takes a train, ponders ghostly arms, legs, and graves (plus a "picture of you smiling when you were young"), and finds himself "laying around in the wreckage of this beautiful little world." It's a jasmine-scented "Sweet Home Alabama" until the banjo warps and the guitar swerves out of tune, producing a beautiful, noisome solo. Eventually, the guitar doubles, bleeding across channels to tear it up even more enormously. They don't try to mix the eruption lower or blend the ferocious tracks; as a result, the guts and scars remain after the song's ripped apart.
Without such great structural interplay, "The Firing of the Midnight Rain", a nine-minute Steve Miller sorta thing, sweats decent whiskey beneath an old moon. As with a few of the tracks, there's precipitation, a solitary man, and days that "slide away, like mud." Olivia Tremor Control psych sighs go well with nostalgic imagery of wind breezing through the pines and sunburst characters drinking canned beer.
"Death Prayer in Heaven's Orchard" has its share of gooey rocker nougat and the closing trucker seance of "The Hanging Heart" strikes a good balance of ingredients, though on "Roll on the Rusted Days" or "Show Business," for instance, the guitars may sound Southern rock authentic, but they feel more like homage than personal statement. This happens a few times: Beneath a charismatic coating, the stuff can drag.
Another problem: Miller possesses a good voice, but avoids shredding his throat as much as he does with Comets on Fire. The lack of vocal variety can lull. Also, that Blue Cathedral-style sound's fuller and more frantic, allowing him to mate his howls with snarls buzzing around him. This seems particularly important: Howlin' Rain occasionally feels small even though music like this begs for eternal Nuge largess.
What's it all mean? The aesthetic's familiar and comforting, but not always compelling. The one great song and two or three good ones make for fine close listening. The rest, that more generic chaff, serve as a decent soundtrack for when you have the top down and find yourself driving nowhere in particular.

Paul Brendon Lile - Blood Water Fire

 9. Knowing Him -  3:58
10. No Regrets -  3:19
11. Pressing On -  3:04
12. Simple Love - 11:10

This album is born in Kentucky and Tennessee Blues Gospel truth. The tones speak to the serious nature of the truth of the Gospel, and the love that was already given for us through Christ Jesus (to whom every knee will bow).
I close my eyes and count to ten for it is Christian rock time again. If memory serves, this is the third album by Paul Brendon Lile to make its way through the hellmouth at Bluesbunny Towers and, with  “Blood Water Fire” being a good strong title, could you fight demons with the songs contained within?
Well, not really. Paul Brendon Lile has a good voice and can testify up there with the best of the white boys but, like too many singer songwriters these days, he has progressed from playing with himself to playing pretty much everything himself. The result, predictably, is an album cursed with banality. Nothing wrong with the songs and they are undoubtedly from the heart but the leaden performance drags things down, down down and, as our Mr. Lile is also responsible for the awkward production, he gets to take all the blame. I’m not sure if self-indulgence is a sin but, let’s face it, it should be for musicians.
Still, it is a bit of a shame that praying to Jesus hasn’t got Paul Brendon Lile a few more pals to join in and liven up these songs as the Devil has been getting it a bit too easy of late.

11. Silver - 4:58

Though blues is the central theme on his debut CD, Robert also crosses over into rock and funk territory. Earthshaking blues guitar licks, raw soulful vocals, and funky-infested grooves are heard throughout this CD. It doesn't stop at the music though, Robert's lyrics and songwriting adds a creative touch to blues on tracks like "Belly Dancin' Woman," "Silver," and "Power Trip." Imagine a late 60s era Eric Clapton and you have Robert Allen Parker.Slide guitar, B3 organ, loads of tribal percussion, and pure delta blues harmonica give this CD a retro 60s/70s feel. In the year of the blues, 2003, it is good to know that artists like Robert Allen Parker will keep the torch lit.
Robert Allen Parker is a Memphis-bred musician who knows his city's musical history well. After discovering the endless links between blues and rock, Robert's musical appetite became Muddy Waters, Albert King, Cream, Sly Stone, The Black Crowes, John Lee Hooker, Stax/Hi Records, Howlin' Wolf, exa. Over time, he played alongside such Memphis music legends as Rufus Thomas, Howard Grimes/Leroy Hodges of the HI RHYTHM SECTION, and Ben Cauley/Sherman Guy of the BAR-KAYS. Now as a solo artist, he plans to bring the blues to an audience in need of an escape from corporate music.

For those of you not familiar with the music of Mason Ruffner, please read on; you may be surprised at what you re missing. For those of you that have spent any amount of time in New Orleans over the past 30 years, you are probably very familiar with Mason as he has been a mainstay on the New Orleans club circuit since he relocated to the Big Easy from FortWorth, TX in 1977. Back in the late 70s, Ruffner was just a kid with a guitar, some hot licks and dreams of stardom. He is now an accomplished journeyman guitar ace that has recorded with the likes of Bob Dylan and Daniel Lanois and toured with U2, Jimmy Page and Ringo Starr. During the past three decades, Ruffner has also released a string of critically acclaimed albums beginning with his 1985 self-titled debut. Mason Ruffner spent his first few years in the Crescent City playing up and down Bourbon Street with his band The Blues Rockers. Soon stars like Bruce Springsteen, Carlos Santana and Stevie Ray Vaughan began showing up at Ruffner s gigs, often asking to sit in with the rising guitar wizard. In 1985, Mason signed a contract with CBS Records and began recording his debut album with Rick Derringer as producer. In October of 85, 'Mason Ruffner' was released to universal praise from critics and fellow musicians alike. On the heels of glowing reviews in Rolling Stone and the New York Times, the song Just Be My Friend started popping up on various radio playlists around the country, an unusual feat for an album dripping with New Orleans blues. In 1987, Mason released his album 'Gypsy Blood'. This time out, Ruffner chose British pub-rock legend Dave Edmunds to produce. Not only did the album ring true with critics (Rolling Stone s review, when comparing Ruffner to Mark Knopfler, brashly stated Meet the new sultan of swing. ), but the album also found a home at rock radio; the title track climbed to #11 on the mainstream rock chart. It was during this flurry that Bob Dylan discovered Ruffner s music and invited Mason to play guitar his wonderfully swampy masterpiece 'Oh Mercy'. It is with great pride that American Beat Records is releasing these two pivotal albums on one CD an ABR exclusive! So sit back, close your eyes, and get swept away into a musical landscape of vintage Dixie rhythm & blues and Bourbon Street gin joints

Scott Keeton and The Deviants released their new CD 100 Mile Blues, April 6, 1999. JSP signed the band last fall and this is their first release with them. All twelve tracks on this disc are original and range from deep guitar fueled blues such as "Nothing Left to Say," to the drag ‘em out "Back Door Shuffle," from the Dwight Yokum-flavored, "Look At That Girl" to the lyrical romantic playing of "Heart Break" and "Eye On You." It is great stuff and will particularly appeal to those of you with a taste for other cross-generic show stoppers such as The Paladins.
Keeton, based in Oklahoma City where this CD was recorded, has soaked in the musical sounds of the region -- not only blues and rock but also some gritty Southern soul as well. His unwavering commitment to the heart of its songs, a guitar style that could storm a besieged embassy, and a more than on the money vocal style push the listener to a special place. He has amassed twelve years of blues-playing experience, and has been the toast of the South and Southwestern blues clubs for at least seven years.
He is accompanied by other virtuoso band members; Ike Lamb, guitar, Steven J. Streetman, and James Wyrick, drums.

 9. Killing Floor - 2:34
10. Dust My Broom - 3:22
11. Blu-E - 5:12
12. Sidetracked - 5:02

Who would have guessed that Elliott Sharp, that avant-garde, mad scientist, guitarist supreme, would play such soulful blues? On Terraplane, Sharp takes on 12 tracks either written or popularized by his blues idols, as well as four original compositions in similar styles. Ably accompanied by bassist David Hofstra and drummer Joseph Trump, he is nothing less than absolutely convincing here. Dispensing with the irony and impotent intellectualism that often hampers his other work, Sharp plays his guitar with verve and spirit. He showcases a good variety of tones and approaches to the instrument as well, showing that, without a doubt, he has done his homework. In addition to his conventional guitar playing, he also plays some mean lap steel, as capably demonstrated on "Sitting on Top of the World." Every once in a while, Sharp's avant-garde roots come to the forefront, but when they do, they remind the listener more of Jimi Hendrix' extremely progressive approach to the blues than anything else. The original compositions are quite good, with such memorable moments as the funky vamp of "'Sixty-Six" or the unusual turnaround of "Snowy Day." Sharp has never sounded this spontaneous and as in-control of his instrument. Fans of blues and blues guitar should do themselves a favor and pick this up, as they will no doubt be pleasantly surprised. Dirty, funky, and full of the genuine spirit of the blues, Terraplane, although an anomaly with regard to sound and approach, is one of the high points of Sharp's extensive catalog.

"This set (reissued on CD) is a bit unusual, for it features bluesman Lonnie Johnson with a Canadian Dixieland band, McHarg's Metro Stompers. In addition to including a few Johnson vocals, he takes credible solos on some trad jazz standards, including "China Boy." Six of the 13 numbers do not have the guitarist, putting the focus on the fine Dixieland band, which includes cornetist Charlie Gall, and clarinetist Eric Neilson in addition to the leader on bass. The original LP only sold 1,000 copies, so this reissue brings back music heard by very few at the time; this was Lonnie Johnson's last regular recording, although he did cut a series of numbers for Smithsonian in 1967."

Chicago Blues Veteran Steve Arvey along with Tasmania’s Pete Cornelius have combined to release this CD. Pete’s guitar and vocal work behind Steve’s rough voice and excellent playing is quite enjoyable. The CD is well produced with a joyous blend of blues, rock, rock blues, roots and acoustic blues. The tracks are a mixture of original material penned by Steve with some traditional blues material. Phil Wilson handles the bass, Matt Neil is solid on the drums, and Steve says "Pete Cornelius is one of the finest guitar players I have ever known". The union of these two immense talents, produces a CD of awe-inspiring proportions that has the ability to lock in your attention.

This one hit me like a rock. Cathy Jean is far from unknown to my ears so you would think that her confessional and confrontational rock chic -- and I mean that in the nicest way -- persona would have no more than a muted effect on me by now. However, and I should have suspected something given the striking cover art, she really let it rip this time with In the Remains being not so much an album as the sonic equivalent of a hand grenade. ... very focused and consistent. It is a rock album, of course, but Lita Ford wouldn't go anywhere near as far as Cathy Jean has here. The impact isn't the guitars or the drums. It is in her voice. Her words drip alternately with acid, love, pain, indifference and contempt in the way of a proper soul singer. She's telling it like it is and even a guy can get that this time around. In musical terms, there is nothing to complain about. The supporting players do a solid job of providing the foundation for the car crash sentimentality that Cathy Jean possesses with Keith Stafford's guitar easily justifying its place in the spotlight. Of course, if this were a relentless attack on the ears then a fair amount of impact would be lost so it is all the more noticeable that it is the subtler moments such as were found in King Civilian that work best. Having said that, there is something for everyone here as the good old fashioned r&b of You Shuffle proves. The important thing to remember though is that this is not a trivial album. It is hard work to shock anyone these days. Ask Lady Gaga if you don't believe me. Likewise, wearing your heart on your sleeve and reflecting on the pain inflicting inadequacies of your better half is hardly earth shattering. The difference here is the sincerity and you can take every word sung here as having been written in Cathy Jean's own blood. --5 carrots, Bluesbunny, Glasgow, U.K. --Bluesbunny, Glasgow, U.K.

With four CDs of Cathy Jean's in my collection, I've concluded she's one disturbed gal that does an incredible job of expressing it in her music. It often revolves around troubled relationships. She's somewhere between Lady Gaga, Ana Popovic, and Billie Holliday, if that's possible. Cathy Jean can play a mean guitar, have more lyrics in her songs than a novel, which tend to be pretty pointed and raw. What attracts me is the jazz influences intertwined with blues, funk, and rock. From her nude photos in the album sleeve and the high energy her music evokes, once you've been exposed to Cathy Jean, you won't forget her! Cathy Jean is one of the most innovative divas in the world of blues. --Bill Martin, Blues Society Of Tulsa, USA --Blues Society Of Tulsa, USA

... a touch of R&B and gospel in the vibe even though it's a rocker. This singer, who also wrote all of these songs, must have been a seamstress in a previous life. She ties all of these elements together well, even though they are huge in and of themselves... Words usually cannot capture fully what an artist's music truly sounds like. This is especially so in the case of Cathy Jean. She most definitely has a sound all her own, as a singer and songwriter. You'll have to buy the disc if you're tired of the same old blues rock that's been going around for the last decade or so. -- Bill Copeland Music News, Boston, New England, USA --Bill Copeland Music News, Boston, New England, USA

David Bromberg - Use Me

Bitrate: 320K/s

Tracks Listing:
 1. Tongue - 3:31

 9. The Long Goodbye - 3:31
10. Old Neighborhood - 3:58
11. It's Just a Matter of Time - 3:09

Guitarist and fiddler David Bromberg is a legend in roots music circles, a genuine guitar virtuoso and session ace whose quirky mystique has been burnished by periodic withdrawals from the public eye (currently, his full-time job is as a dealer and repairman of vintage violins). He released no music between 1990 and 2007, at which point he emerged briefly from his recording hiatus with the acoustic folk-blues effort Try Me One More Time. Four years later he has come out with a much different project. The aptly titled Use Me is the result of an unusual collaborative effort: Bromberg contacted some of his favorite songwriters (Levon Helm, Tim O'Brien, Keb' Mo', Los Lobos, Dr. John, and John Hiatt, among others) and asked them to write songs for him. The result is a completely entertaining and at times thrilling program of material in a wide variety of styles: "Old Neighborhood" finds Bromberg collaborating with Widespread Panic in a soul-funk vein; "Bring It with You When You Come" is a charming excursion into jug-band skiffle with Helm on drums; "The Long Goodbye" is a tender waltz with Los Lobos. Singing has never been Bromberg's strong suit, but over the years he has learned to make the most of his limited vocal instrument -- notice how he uses his low range and his natural quaver to endearing effect on the old Brook Benton weeper "It's Just a Matter of Time" (on which he's assisted by Linda Ronstadt). It's too bad he didn't try a bit harder on the Hiatt composition "Ride on Out a Ways," which he speaks more than sings, but the song's soulful chord progression provides real melodic interest all on its own. There's a pervasive sense of mutual affection and musical respect throughout this album that makes it a pleasure to listen to even in those moments when its other elements don't quite come together perfectly.

Cathy Jean demonstrates her unique vocal prowess and her love of, and feel for, the blues. She can rock out and be sweet and sensual. A promising debut.
Deep in the quagmire of mainstream pop culture, the blues continue to bubble, and it's purists such as vocalist Cathy Jean who keep the genre percolating. "Tear Me Apart" is a solid mixture of melancholy melodies, balls-to-the-walls blues rockers, and impassioned ballads. Recorded in what sounds like totally live-in-the-studio fashion (very few overdubs are detectable), Cathy Jean's debut twists and turns through a 14-song mountain of blues standards that would make the Swiss Alps envious. And yet, no matter who she borrows from, her voice is a beautiful instrument that serves her needs perfectly-- soulful and soaring, sultry and sexy, and subtly vulnerable at just the right moments. More importantly (and more thoroughly than anyone who comes immediately to mind), CJ inserts her persona and preoccupations into these cover versions; and her takes on classic tracks such as "I'm A Man" (re-written from a female slant) and "One Good Man" makes the former her own and gives new life to the tepid latter. She makes "Who Do You Love" a moving, varied song, as opposed to the schlock electric blues George Thorogood squeezed a hit from. From the spirited, up tempo romp of "Hello Little Boy" to the temperature-rising torch of "Sweet Blood Call," right on through the busy organ and big vocal pyrotechnics of "Rollin' &Tumblin'," "Tear Me Apart" does a marvelous job raising blood pressure. And on the swaying "Baby Get Lost," she piques the libido with, "I got so many men they're standing in line." Hmmmm... where do I take a number? On "Tear Me Apart," this lady doesn't just sing the blues, she feels 'em. And when that voice works each end of her angelic register (and every note in between), you can't help but feel 'em right along with her. That Cathy Jean has absorbed the obvious influences the blues has to offer while escaping their cliches already says a great deal about how tough this woman is. --MUSIC MONTHLY MAGAZINE, USA
Listening to the album "Tear Me Apart", you become aware of one thing: Cathy Jean is a most versatile and inventive artist for a woman still on the right side of thirty. On this debut set she covers a wide range of songs and sounds, which each test her abilities in various styles of blues, jazz, and jump. This whole album is interesting and entertaining, and doesn't lose anything by repeated playing. Cathy Jean knows how to pace herself, be it over a 2 1/2 minute rockin' number, or a 5 1/2 minute blues cut about needing "One Good Man". Of all the fine material contained on the set, perhaps it's "That's All Right", a bare bones acapella number which best indicates the cloth she is cut from. This gal isn't afraid to go out there and lay it all on the line, and let the listeners decide. Others have compared her to Janis Joplin. There is indeed a similarity, Joplinesque phrasing does creep in, but this is no copyist. Just as her cover of the Billie Holiday classic "Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me" is similar in approach to Lady Day's version, but by no means an impersonation. What we are hearing is the application of the best aspects of a past talent, put to good use by a new talent, and that's always been the case in most art forms. Cathy Jean is a real star in the waiting. Very deserving of recognition and success. Equally important on this album are the fine musicians in the backing band. There are some wonderful solos and nice touches from all involved, never overshadowing but certainly enhancing the vocals. Recordings made "live in the studio" appear to be in vogue at the
moment. This album is such a collection, cut over a three day period in '95, but it works. The band comes together with each
other and with Cathy Jean. Her comment, "that was fine", at the close of the first number, is a real understatement if ever there was one! Featuring little post-recording tampering, you get an amazingly fresh feel which draws you into it. You can't help but like this attractive blonde from Baltimore, who has and wears more rings than Ringo Starr!! --DENMARK BLUES MAGAZINE
